Trust Dale Carnegie to succinctly capture the relationship between Success and Happiness. The choice is in your hand. The dictionary can give you a definition of success, but real success is only determined by you.
We saw Hitler, Napoleon, Al Capone, Sam Giancanna, John Gotti, and others who succeeded in becoming crime king pins. Closer home we have the crime kings whom we all are familiar with, without taking names. Stalin succeeded in murdering millions of his own people. Imelda Marcos succeeded in owning the worlds largest shoe collection. Are any of these people a success? Would you aim to be like them?
On the other hand Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi and many other leaders succeeded in getting themselves killed. Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Theresa were poor but they were successful in what they did. Mahatma Gandhi is called the Father of the nation and Mother Teresa was the messiah of the poor,Dr. Frederick Banting and Dr. Alexander Flemming saved millions of people with their medical breakthroughs. Are any of these people a success?

The dictionary definition gives a very basic definition that provides a good place to work from but a dictionary definition is inadequate to provide a platform to base a life and career on. The dictionary simply states that success is achieving a goal and usually a goal of finance or power. But be careful is financial success real success?
Howard Hughes, was an American business magnate, investor, aviator, engineer, film producer, director and philanthropist. He was one of the wealthiest people in the world. He gained prominence from the late 1920s as a maverick film producer, making big-budget and often controversial films like The Racket (1928), Hell’s Angels (1930), Scarface (1932), and The Outlaw (1943). Hughes was one of the most influential aviators in history; he set multiple world air-speed records, built the Hughes H-1 Racer and H-4 “Hercules” (better known to history as the “Spruce Goose”) aircraft, and acquired and expanded Trans World Airlines which would later on merge with American Airlines. Hughes is also remembered for his eccentric behavior and reclusive lifestyle in later life, caused in part by a worsening obsessive–compulsive disorder(OCD) and/or chronic pain. His legacy is maintained through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. was one of the richest men alive, yet the latter part of his life was spent as a paranoid recluse. More recently, Mohd Gaddafi – a man reigned Libya with a iron fist for over 30 years and close multi billion dollars at his disposal – whose life ended with being shot dead in a cave. His achievements were nothing more than being the master mind of keeping the citizens under his rule and committing many crimes
So are all the people we have talked about till now been successful?
Success is, without question, achieving a goal. But your goal must be a worthy one. Some of the people listed above are true successes in spite of their ignoble ends. Martin Luther King was murdered before he saw the results of his efforts to bring about civil rights for the oppressed in the USA. Mahatma Gandhi freed India from the British Empire – without an army. Dr. Banting discovered insulin and Dr. Flemming discovered penicillin. All these men were hugely successful
What will your definition of success be? It could be a career goal, maintaining good health, spiritual attainment, emotional, use of time, make it big in your profession or business or finance. The list is much longer than this and can include just about anything. You are going to have to dig very deep inside yourself and do some serious soul searching to discover what success means to you.
Success should be a driving force but not a sole objective in your life as being totally consumed by Success one will forget to enjoy and be happy.
Happiness is something everyone wants to have. You may be successful banker, professional, entrepreneur and have a lot of money, but without happiness it will be meaningless. So, it is good to understand what is happiness
- a state of well-being and contentment
- a pleasurable or satisfying experience
Mahatma Gandhi quoted Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony. Happiness is that state of consciousness which proceeds from the achievement of one’s values is how Ayn Rand, the great author had to say it. Aristotle, the great greek philosopher said Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.
So we can say that happiness is a decision you make. Your happiness is your decision to make.
Happiness is a mental state of well-being characterized by positive emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. Philosophers and religious thinkers often define happiness in terms of living a good life, or flourishing, rather than simply as an emotion.
So Success and Happiness is for you to define. The success of any professional pursuit should rest on the definitions you have carved out for yourself. We will have many ups and down in a career/business spanning decades, as long the core is well defined and imbibed nothing can hold you from achieving it
Success will be seen by the world at large, happiness if for you to feel. Don’t get overpowered by the trapping that come with success, enjoy it nonetheless but be careful, the mind has the ability to make you lose focus. As advisors the first thing you need to do is make your own financial plan. After all if you are not managing your benefits of success effectively how can you advise your clients to do it. Believe in it yourself, live by example. If you make your hobby your career/business and you are successful then Happiness is entrenched in you. Nurture it and devour it, the mind can play games and take away the happiness even if you are successful. So
Success and Happiness is for you to define, no one else can do it for you.
